Conveyor Chain Selection

Chain Form and Pitch Selection

1.Chain Form

Chain type is determined based on the mounting shape, the nature of the conveyed material, and the processing method.

Please refer to the chart below and select according to your intended application


Roller Type Use Feature
S Type Bucket Elevator, Flow Conveyor Flow conveyor for low-abrasion material (grain, feed, etc.)
R Type Slat, Apron Conveyor Near-center conveyor
F Type Slat, Apron Conveyor Far from center conveyor
M Type Flow Conveyor Conveyor for highly-abrasive materials (cement, cokes etc.)

3. Determining Chain Pitch

Dimensions of the conveyor chains are approximately determined by the dimensions of the attachments, the type of goods to be transported, transport capacity and speed, and equipment being used.


* Sprocket Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) = 1000 x transport speed (meters/minute) / dimensions x pitch (mm)

The shortest possible chain pitch within the acceptable range should be selected to reduce damage caused by impact and extend the lifespan of the chain.





Select of Chain Standard

Chain strength is calculated by using the tension formula and is then multiplied by the safety factor, which indicates the required chain hardness.


Please check to determine if the previously selected breaking strength level is satisfactory. If not, then please select a breaking strength that is one grade higher than the previously selected chain.

The safety factor is determined to consider the proper using condition(clean room temperature, satisfactory fueling condition) and strength safety factor. In the situations below, lifespan can be reduced by 1/10 - 1/2, so please select chains according to our recommendation and conveyor system circumstances.

Limited Temperature and Safety Factor

If proper heat treatment isn’t applied to chains that deal with high-temperature environments and/or substances, the chains’ lifespans can be drastically reduced. We provide the best heat-treatment on the market, and encourage our clients to consult our specialists as to which type of material and heat-treatment is right for you.

Temperate Use-Limit by Series (°C)

Generally speaking, the mechanical properties of the materials degrade over time when exposed to working conditions such as low temperatures, high temperatures, high impact etc., so it is imperative to disclose your working conditions and other criteria to ensure proper selection of suitable chains.
